The Lizards lost the first game in MLL history, 16–13 to Baltimore on June 7, 2001 — then beat those same Bayhawks 15–11 to win the first championship. Gary and Paul Gait were both on that inaugural title team, with Paul named championship game MVP. The Bayhawks rivalry defined the early league: the two met in five championship games (2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2010). Their third title, in 2015, came with Paul Rabil as playoff MVP and Greg Gurenlian as league MVP — still the only faceoff specialist ever to win it. Rob Pannell arrived as the 2013 Rookie of the Year and plays for the Maryland Whipsnakes today.
